“Ode to Self” with audio. Written and read by Stephen J. Dawson Jr.

Ode to Self by Stephen J. Dawson Jr.

“I lit a smoke
And every burn
Is one step closer to the urn
Or so I hope
And just to cope,
I share with whiskey my concerns”

I wrote it down
And read in awe
Then tied it to a pigeon’s claw
He flew away
Into the day
And the world I feel I must withdraw

You see, I’m scared
Of every man
Scared to shake their germy hands
So, I just look
And write this book
About the one whose life is damned

The dirty drunk!
Agoraphobe!
Afraid to step from his abode
Of him, I write
Be him, I might
The subject matter of my ode

Yet, still, I fear
Someday I’ll die
So I send pigeon’s through the sky
To find new homes
For all my poems
And give this world a new delight

It’s my life’s work
I want to see
How my poems affected thee
So, I faced my fears
To see the cheers
The readers of my poems received

But then I found
A makeshift bed
A million thoughts raced through my head
A pigeon’s nest!
Those filthy pests!
The lining of their old home read,

“I lit a smoke
And every burn
Is one step closer to the urn
Or so I hope
And just to cope,
I share with whiskey my concerns”
